Instagram today announced the Australian launch of one-to-one visual messaging app, Bolt. Prior to today, Instagram's new app was only available in New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa.

Despite Instagram's Facebook ownership, Bolt doesn't require users to login with a either a Facebook or Instagram account; the app makes use of user's phone number instead.

The new app is designed to make visual messaging as quick as possible; one tap sends a photo, and tap-and-hold sends a video. Bolt is slightly less ephemeral than competitors like Snapchat. While Snapchat messages will automatically self-destruct, photos sent through Bolt won't disappear until they are swiped away by the recipient.

Bolt is available as a free download for both iOS and Android.
