The cheapest quad core phone yet, the Huawei Ascend D1 quad, has arrived in Australia and will be exclusively available at JB HiFi.

The smartphone comes bundled with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720p IPS+ display, 8MP camera and Ice Cream sandwich. The 8.9mm thin handset is capable of HSPA+ speeds (21Mbps down, 5.76Mbps up).

The new gadget will hit JB HiFi shelves tomorrow and will be priced at AU$499 outright. It will work on all Australian 3G networks.

Unlike most other smartphones sold in Australia, the Ascend D1 quad will not be available on contract through traditional telco carriers like Telstra, Optus or Vodafone.

The new phone will come under Huawei’s most ambitious smartphone strategy to date. The company plans to establish a new classification system by dividing the bulk of its handsets into four core groups starting with the high-end D-series at the top and working its way down to the bargain bin Y-series.
