Apple’s upcoming quantum dot-laden displays may sound something off a science-fiction movie but it’s closer to fact than you think. The US Patent and Trademark Office published four new patent applications that concern the displays that will be installed on future Apple products.

According to the documents, the displays will feature quantum dots in tandem with micro electromechanical systems shutter control, which should enhance the colour gamut of displays to produce more vivid and clearer images.

Moreover, the new technology would allow backlight dimming which should correct any LED colour shift and thereby improving colour accuracy.

Quantum dot technology is already being used in commercially available products such as the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX7, so it shouldn’t take long for this innovation to be equipped to Apple products of the near future.
