Apple is once again trying to extend its reach to other industries as it announced CarPlay – a new system that creates a seamless integration between your iOS devices and your car.

The system essentially allows users to connect their iPhone or iPads to a vehicle and control the various functions of the phone using the user interface of the car. With CarPlay, users can play music, use the phone’s navigation features, take phone calls, read text messages or watch YouTube videos.

On the other end of the spectrum, Apple’s CarPlay will also allow users to control specific mechanisms of the car using the phone. For example, a driver can activate the vehicles wipers or start the engine remotely using commands passed through Siri.

Users will be able to control the system by using a touchscreen unit built into the dashboard of future cars equipped with the system, using traditional control knobs and buttons on the car’s dashboard, or through voice commands through Siri.

Apple is reportedly working with a number of carmakers worldwide including Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volvo, Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Ford, Kia, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot-Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota.

The system will be compatible with devices equipped with a lightning connector (which means, the iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S and future models) but Wi-Fi connection is also expected to arrive in the future.
